Dress Up

Este phrasal verb es bastante facilón, pero podría ser confuso. Dress up no es solo vestirse, ¡sino vestirse bien! Vestirse elegante.

1) A: When do you usually dress up?
    B: For weddings. Otherwise, I'm always in jeans.

2) I'm going to a church service for the first time in my life on Sunday. Do I need to dress up?

También se puede usar como adjetivo, aunque para eso yo en general prefiero usar el viejo y querido well dressed*:

3) Why are you so dressed up? The invitation said casual...

Dress up también puede significar "disfrazarse".

4) A: Are you coming to my costume party?
     B: Yes. I'm dressing up as a nurse. What do you think?

Dress up también puede querer decir "disfrazar" algo en el sentido de hacerlo ver más importante de lo que es.

A: I'm going out with Mike, the chief of staff.
B: You mean the waiter.
A: He's not a waiter.
B: He tries to dress it up as something important by that chief of staff title, but he's basically an important waiter.

*Una reflexión de último momento: Uno puede estar dressed up sin estar well dressed, y estar well dressed sin estar dressed up. Temo que, con mi comentario, se haya dado a entender que dressed up y well dressed significan lo mismo, cuando no es así. A veces, los significados pueden coincidir, pero no necesariamente es siempre así. Dressed up es estar vestido elegante. Well dressed es estar bien vestido. Oof!
